The European Parliament is asking the Court of Justice to make sure a trade deal with Mercosur countries follows EU rules and won't weaken important laws.

The EU 2025 Deforestation‑Free Products Regulation is a rule that makes it easier for small producers to prove their goods don’t cause forest loss, forces traders and sellers to register, keep five‑year records, verify compliance, sets inspection percentages, big fines for violations, and plans regular reviews to keep the system working.

The EU Parliament passed a resolution that speeds up monitoring and investigations, tightens the rules for stopping imports, adds extra health, safety and environmental checks, and cracks down on companies trying to dodge the rules, all to better protect EU farmers and consumers in the EU‑Mercosur farm trade.

EU Parliament’s December 16, 2025 resolution says the EU must cancel the approval of the GM sugar beet KWS20‑1 until more thorough safety, environmental and farmer‑fairness data are available and the GMO decision‑making process must be reformed to include proper checks and member‑state votes.

The European Parliament resolution says the renewal of GM maize NK603 should be stopped until more long‑term safety and environmental data are available, and that the decision‑making process for GMOs must be more democratic and transparent.
