A new food scandal shakes the European Union: About 63 tonnes of Brazilian beef, contaminated with the EU‑banned growth hormone estradiol, entered the market and, as reported, was sold in at least ten EU states. Estradiol is banned in the EU for health and safety reasons because hormonally active substances can leave residues in meat that are incompatible with strict European food standards.
