I have been repeatedly questioned about a text under debate in the European Parliament, which aims to criminalise smuggling networks that exploit the misery of migrants. Indeed, there is a major risk that, with the adoption of this text in its current form, a conflation would lead to the criminalisation of migrant aid associations as well. With my group Renew Europe we are fighting to prevent this. It would be a major and dangerous shift. I have submitted several amendments in that direction, to protect humanitarian associations, and I am fighting, with my progressive colleagues, against this criminalisation promoted by the right and the far right.
